Around Town this weekend

The University of the 3rd Age (U3A) West Rand is going on a day trip by bus to Bronkhorstspruit.

Its a long weekend (for some) and the weather is turning, so grab the kids and jump in the car and get some much needed fresh air while out and about this weekend.

Here’s what’s happening in and around town:

Three Koppie Hike

Join the three-koppie group tour of up to 10km through the Melville Koppies.

12 AUGUST — Join the three-koppie group tour of up to 10km through the Melville Koppies. The group sets off 8.30am sharp. You can park, meet and pay in the upper car park at Marks Park on Judith Road, Emmarentia. Costs are R60 for adults and R40 for children – all donations are used to maintain the Koppies. Hikers must be fit with good balance as paths are rocky and steep. Children must be over six years old. Sorry, no dogs allowed. Decorex Joburg

Decorex Joburg is celebrating its 25th milestone exhibition.

8–12 AUGUST — Decorex Joburg is celebrating its 25th milestone exhibition with a vibrant features programme showcasing the best of local décor, design and lifestyle creations. Included in this year’s #rhythmoflife exhibition is the ever-popular South African Craft Collective comprising 60 local craft entrepreneurs featuring a variety of handmade home, gift and fashion accessories that reflect the warm South African cultural heritage across the nine provinces. Day trip with U3A

22 AUGUST — The University of the 3rd Age (U3A) West Rand is going on a day trip by bus to Bronkhorstspruit for a guided tour through the Nan Hau Buddhist Temple. Good opportunities for photography outside. We then go to Cullinan where we can see the replicas of the extraordinarily large diamonds mined there and take a guided motorised tour to the mine, the dumps and the big hole. Magalies Rocks the Cradle

24–26 AUGUST — The Magalies Rocks the Cradle Weekend Festival offers 72 hours of relax, explore, experience and unwind. A combination of distinctive offerings set against a magnificent backdrop of mountains, valleys, rivers and indigenous woodland makes this three-day celebration unmissable! There’s something for everyone. Entry to many of the events is free while tickets for others can be purchased online at www.magaliesrocksthecradle.co.za.

Art Workshop at Ngwenya Glass Village

25 AUGUST — Come and join in the fun and take home a professional painting (ready to hang) at Ngwenya Glass Village, in Muldersdrift’s Art Workshop. The theme of the workshop is ‘Shelf of mixed herbs and flowers’. Registration starts at 9am. Coffee/ tea and muffins will be served throughout the workshop. No experience required; everything will be supplied. Costs for the day is R700. Bring your apron and a smile! Booking is essential. High Tea at Garden World

25 AUGUST — Join Sandy Roberts from the Margaret Roberts Herbal Centre at a delicious high tea morning filled with anti-aging herbs and health herbs, and learn how to create your own teas from your garden!
