Members of Conserv Security, a company based in Muldersdrift, recently joined the fight against land expropriation without compensation when they attended one of the public hearings in Westonaria.

Before the public hearings, both the ANC and the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, announced their support of the amendment of section 25 of the Constitution which will allow them to “explicitly” expropriate land without compensation. The amendment was one of the main talking points at the hearings.

Conserv is located in Muldersdrift which is a mostly rural area just outside Krugersdorp. The area generally consists of game farms and lodges and residents are constantly in fear of losing their lives as they are victims of farm attacks and house robberies. Conserv serves the Muldersdrift community by providing private security. However, if the Constitution is amended and land expropriation takes place, they won’t be able to stop those who take it by force.

The public hearing process was tedious according to Trevor Roberts, owner of Conserv, with the majority of the folk clothed in red all singing from the same old hymn sheet.

Those who are in favour of the amendment of this section still have a long way to go, as numerous public hearings are still set to take place all over the country and the courts still have until the end of September to review the section.

Parliament’s Constitutional Review Committee finished the public hearings (which took place all over South Africa) on Saturday, 4 August. Now they have one final phase to complete: the oral submissions to Parliament which will take place from Tuesday, 7 August to Friday, 17 August. This will serve as feedback from South Africans through presenters.

Trevor was also one of the speakers at the public hearing and a video of his comments can be seen at
