It may seem that the reports on Facebook by angry residents, saying that Rand Water and cable theft are not at fault for the current water crisis, are true and that Mogale City Local Municipality is the culprit.
Residents have expressed their disgust after being without water for almost three days.
The News has received very concerning information from the DA’s Leon Basson, who is the Shadow Minister for Water and Sanitation, about Mogale’s Rand Water account. Rand Water has decided to cut Mogale’s water supply by 20 per cent.
Mogale City is currently 30 days in arrears, owing R17,9 million. But the total amount due by Mogale is far more – a staggering R37 million.
Rand Water’s Chief Financial Officer exchanged letters with Mogale’s Municipal Manager, Pringle Raedani, saying that Mogale should pay half of the outstanding amount.
In response, Raedani agreed to pay R7 million tomorrow, and the rest in the first week of July, resulting in Rand Water sticking to its decision to reduce the water supply by 20 per cent.
Jacques Hoon, Caucus leader of the local DA, told the News they will approach Raedani within the next couple of days to discuss this serious situation and how Mogale managed to fall into arrears with its water account.
Basson will also be penning a letter to the Minister of Water Affairs about Mogale City’s current situation.
The News will keep readers updated.
