DA releases statement about Krugersdorp’s water crisis

The local Democratic Alliance (DA) will be sending a petition to the National Minister of Water Affairs about the water crisis in Krugersdorp. For the past two weeks, numerous suburbs have had to endure interrupted water supplies.

“The current water crisis is a culmination of many years of stoppages and disruptions in Mogale City. Last week’s Rand Water debacle, internal turmoil within the municipal Water Department itself as a result of a 40 per cent staff vacancy rate, a 50 per cent water loss and zero budget have all contributed to the crisis,” a statement from the DA reads.

The petition reads as follows:

“The ratepayers of Mogale City hereby invoke their basic constitutional right to water by demanding that the Mogale City Local Municipality meets its constitutional responsibility to ensure water security for all its residents. It is incumbent on the municipality to immediately resolve all causes of the widespread disruptions and stoppages in the Water Department, including the lack of equipment and protective clothing for workers, the lack of contingency planning and the unreliability of the standby programme within this Essential Service. For a decade our city has been ravaged by water disruptions.

At this critical point residents demand immediate action to have their constitutional right to water fulfilled.”

The petition will also be sent to the MEC for Local Government and the Executive Mayor of Mogale City.

At this critical time, the DA’s councillors are canvassing support for the petition amongst all affected communities. Community members are asked to add their support for the petition.
