Hoërskool Monument High (Monnas) is honoured to announce that its very own Monnas Choir has been chosen to compete in the 10th annual World Choir Games which will take place in Pretoria in July this year.

According to choir head-boy, Hendrik de Clerk, there will be over 400 choirs from all over the world competing against each other for first place.

Not only was Monnas Choir the seventh choir chosen to participate, they were also chosen to be part of the flag ceremony as well as the closing ceremony.

“We are one of very few choirs chosen for these ceremonies. We are extremely excited about the opportunity and the fact that it will be broadcast nationally,” he said.

The Monnas Choir consists of 122 choir members and was initially made up of girls only after its establishment in 1990. Seven years later, the choir welcomed some male voices. Since then, the choir has been under the leadership of the well-known choir leader, Duncan Fourie.

“Every year, the Monnas Choir participates in Regional Eisteddfods such as the Roodepoort Afrikaans Arts Competition and RACA. We have achieved a number of A++ diplomas, and were appointed as the overall winner in these competitions,” Hendrik added.

In 2017, the Monnas Choir made it through to the final of the KykNet National Singing and Harmony Competition, winning the viewers’ choice award and a R20 000 CD recording.

This choir’s extended repertoire consists of works from the Baroque and Classical periods, as well as contemporary music. This includes various genres such as oratorio, cross-over, sacred and light folk music, as well as ballads. They are very proud of two of their CDs within these genres, namely Hier’s my Hand and Art of Music.

In the past, the Monnas Choir has shot a music video with an up-and-coming young artist, Candy Benson, and even performed at a prestige fashion show by the well-known and acclaimed fashion designer, Gert-Johan Coetzee, who also designed the gown for the choir.

“Our choir has also been honoured to undertake regular tours to other provinces in South Africa, where we performed in various towns and cities,” Hendrik said.

“This is why we are currently looking for sponsors for the World Choir Games. We are in need of sweaters and tog bags carrying both the choir logo and that of the sponsor. This sponsorship will last for five years, and we will use the equipment on various tours all over South Africa.”

He added that this sponsor will also be represented on their next CD album, receive an invitation to their year-end function and be mentioned on social media.

“This is a great opportunity and Monnas Choir would love to share it with the community. We look forward to representing not only our school, but our home town too,” he concluded.
