The man who allegedly shot and killed the person he thought had stolen a tractor from a farm in Tarlton, appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court today, 13 April.

The man, who is believed to be a security officer from a well-known security company, shot and killed the 42-year-old on Saturday, 6 January near the Matshelapad informal settlement.

“The man was allegedly riding on a tractor from his place of employment to his place of residence at Matshelapad when he was followed by a number of security officers and was shot in the head,” said Lucky Matome, spokesperson for the Tarlton Police in a press statement.

“The police were summoned to the scene, where they found the situation to be tense, as the members of the community had attacked the security officer and his colleagues,” said Matome. “The vehicle belonging to the security officers was badly damaged, but the officers escaped unharmed.”

At approximately 11am, the police arrested the 46-year-old security officer who is now facing murder charges.

The accused was granted bail of R10 000 shortly after his arrest. because the court felt that he would not be a flight risk. He was ordered to hand in his personal firearm and his passport.

Today, he appeared in front of the Magistrate again, but the case was postponed to Wednesday, 6 June. The reason for the postponement is to give both the Defence and the State enough time to gather more statements from witnesses and others.

The case is still in the investigation phase and as of yet there has been no mention of a pre-trial or trial date. However, many believe that the case will be transferred to the High Court because of its nature.
