Parents and guardians: are you ready to see some positive changes take place at your school?

The three-year term for current school governing bodies (SGBs) came to an end on 28 February, meaning that the Gauteng Department of Education is urging parents and guardians to make their voices heard as they launch the 2018 SGB elections, which take place from 1 to 31 March in all Gauteng schools.

The theme for this year’s election process is ‘Be Active, Be Principled, Vote Well’; and it’s time for your community to take an active role in the governance of your children’s schools.

What is the role of the SGB?

• Promote the best interests of the school

• Ensure development of the school through the provision of quality education for all learners

• Support the principal with financial administration, maintenance of the school, the recommendation of appointment of staff etc.

Who can be voted in?

• Parents and legal guardians with children registered at the school

• Educators at the school

• Other members of staff at the school (who are not educators)

• Learners in secondary school

No formal qualifications are required, but skills such as accounting, bookkeeping, and legal services are recommended. The person should also have a passion for education.

Why is it important to vote?

The South African Schools Act 84 of 1996 (SASA) gives governing bodies considerable powers to govern schools, which means that school governance is a key element in the quality of a school’s overall teaching, learning and management.

The Gauteng Member of the Executive Council for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, said that, “Active participation by skilled professionals will ensure that the principal, educators and other staff of the school receive adequate support in the performance of their professional functions, and encourage other parents, learners, educators and other staff to render voluntary services to the school.

“Your role as a parent, regardless of your race or background, is critical because it will assist the department to improve learning outcomes and enable us to reach the goal of providing quality education in all our schools,” he went on.

How to nominate an SGB member:

You can complete a nomination form available from your school. This needs to be seconded by another parent. The person you nominate must accept the nomination before you submit the form to the school. If you’d like to join the SGB yourself, you can seek a nomination, but you’re not allowed to nominate yourself.

All nominations must be submitted at least seven days before any election meeting called by your school. At the meeting, a quorum of 10 per cent is required. This means that at least 10 per cent of the parents of the learners at the school must be present.

Parents, you can have a say in the governance of your children’s school. Participating fully in the nomination and election of SGB members will help ensure that the school serves the best interests of your children.
