Gauteng Community Safety MEC, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane is concerned about safety issues in Gauteng, particularly in farm schools. Road safety is of particular concern.

This prompted the MEC to visit three schools – Kwaggafontein farm school, Tarlton Intermediate School and Unity Primary School – on 5 March.

During the visit, the MEC encouraged learners to resist the temptation to engage in illegal activities such as bullying, substance abuse and gangsterism. She was accompanied by members of the police and the Road Traffic Management Corporation.

“The Community Policing Relations Programme is critical to fostering relations between law-enforcement agencies and communities. These kinds of programmes will enhance the community’s trust in our police, as it is important that the learners see the police as their protectors, not as their enemies,” said Nkosi-Malobane.

“I will continue to conduct random visits in various schools in Gauteng to address the various safety-related issues and road-safety education.

Police visibility will be intensified through sector policing, especially during peak hours at schools to ensure the learners’ safety. The patroller movement will also be strengthened by the deployment of more patrollers to act as a force multiplier to work closely with the schools to rid them of all illegal activities.

In an effort to uplift learners’ performance, the department handed over school bags and dignity packs to the learners. This is aimed at encouraging academic excellence, especially among learners from disadvantage background.
