The runners were ready with leashes in hand and their furry companions next to their feet. And they’re off. Tiny jellybean-sized toes were quickly painted with slippery, sticky, soggy mud and a few owners lost some takkies along the way – but everyone was smiling.

Their goal? To raise as much money as possible for their homeless furry friends living in shelters.

The Muddy Puppy Race was hosted at Walkhaven Dog Park by One Plan Pet Insurance and by the time the starting whistle was blown, everyone was already covered in mud, including the dogs, and both humans and dogs were having a ball.

This tail-wagging event took place on Saturday, 3 February and was a barking success.

At the end of the track was a blow-up slip-and-slide decorated with heaps of foam. One… two… three… and off they went into the white abyss. The joyous barks and wagging tails said it all.

A portion of the money raised on the day went to Animal Protection Network (APN), an Alberton-based animal shelter, and even though the event was over, the competitors knew there would be another Muddy Puppy event at the same park on 8 April to help another animal shelter in need.

Walkhaven is still in need of a dogfood sponsor, so if you’re interested in helping some furry friends, contact Lesley on 072 537 0122.
