Let your invention help others

If you have a special invention and don’t know where or how to channel it, you might want to consider entering the West Rand’s first-ever Youth in Action Social Entrepreneurship Competition.

Are you the creator of a brainchild so big, so brilliant, so extravagantly original, that your brain is bursting at the seams? This regional competition is now open to young people between the ages of 16 and 30 years.

According to Zinhle Dlamini, organiser of the competition, the aim is to tap into the human potential of the youth and to encourage them to come up with innovations in the form of tangible products and services.

“We are looking for innovations that will help solve some of the challenges within the West Rand communities to help improve the quality of life. This initiative will also help create jobs and provide employment,” she said.

Even though the competition and the awards are an initiative of a ministry in Roodepoort’s CBD, the Word in Action Ministries (Wiam), a Christian non-governmental organisation founded in 2008 by Dr Maurice Bouman, it remains open to all youth, whether or not they are members of the church.

Interested youth can send an email to [email protected] for entry forms, competition rules or more information. Winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony in June next year.

“We want to spread the word so that the youth all over the West Rand can enter. I also want sponsors to come on board and support this initiative. We really have some intelligent, innovative youngsters among us, and we want to showcase their potential,” Zinhle concluded.
