Dry taps and low pressure in Mindalore explained

Water being pumped out of the burst pipe on Richardson Avenue, Mindalore.

Residents of Mindalore have been experiencing poor water pressure and dry taps since yesterday, 4 September.

There are a few explanations for these water woes.

In a Facebook post, Jade Miller, the local DA councillor, explained that the water pressure issues were related to water usage in the lower areas of Mindalore.

“This situation normally occurs in October each year. The problem at the moment is caused by households in the bottom/ lower sections of the suburb watering their gardens. Those living higher up are suffering due to this.”

She also said that Mogale City Local Municipality had warned these residents to use water sparingly to allow the top sections to have access as well.

The municipality cannot increase pressure to the reservoir as this will definitely cause burst pipes.

However, residents have also reported dry taps.

“This is due to a burst pipe near the intersection of Richardson Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Street,” said Dennis Pretorius, DA ward councillor for Mindalore.

“Municipal workers are currently on scene fixing the pipe. It’s unclear when the issue will be resolved and when water will be restored to the areas with dry taps. The estimated time of water restoration is said to be by 2pm. Officials are pleading with all estates and residents to stop watering gardens, if not, stricter restrictions may be imposed.”

It’s important to mention that residents of Mindalore will not be affected by the water outages scheduled for the western suburbs of Johannesburg, i.e. the Randburg suburbs and surrounds.

The areas affected by the scheduled Western Suburb outages are:

Robindale Ext 1, Jacanlee, Cresta extensions, Darrenwood, Aldara Park, Windsor, Robin Hills, Windsor Glen, Rand Park Exts 4, 5, and 6, Fontainebleau, the Linden tower area, Pine Park and Rxt 1, Linden extensions, the Kensington reservoir zone, Bryanston Exts 3 and 5, Beverly Gardens, Ferndale (all extensions), Strijdom Park, Summit Road, Vandia Grove (all extensions), Bryanbrink, Daniel Brink Park, Lyme Park Exts 3 and 4 and Kensington B.
