Morné Brandon, a 17-year-old athlete from Monument High School, surprised friend and foe when he walked away with a bronze medal for discus at this year’s IAAF World Youth Championships which took place in Nairobi, Kenya recently.

Morné, who’s a product of the newly established Accelerada Academy, formerly known as the Pierre Blignaut Shot put and Discus Academy, trained endlessly and improved his skills to such an extent that he beat some of the best discus throwers in the world.

“It was a very tough competition,” said Morné. “I had to dig deep to secure a podium position with my final attempt of 58,34m.”

“I was fortunate enough to have my coach, Pierre, with me during the competition. He managed to keep me calm and guided me throughout.”

Pierre, who was there in his capacity as national throws coach, is also one of the founding members of the Accelerada Academy, which aims to deliver many more champions in the future.

Pierre added that Morné showed great character throughout the competition and refused to give up. He said that Morné improved with each attempt.

“As a coach, I am very proud of his achievement,” said Pierre. “Morne will be a role model to many youngsters at our Academy and his achievement will serve as motivation to work towards the same or even bigger achievements in the future.”

The South African Team finished on top of the medals table with five gold, three silvers and three bronzes.
