Crash kills 70-year-old woman on notoriously dangerous road

A senior citizen was killed and another sustained moderate injuries after two vehicles collided at the intersection of Robert Broom Drive and the Paardekraal Drive (R28) on/ off ramp in Chancliff on Saturday, 22 July.

ER24 and Netcare 911 paramedics were called to the scene at about 11.30am, Upon arrival they found both vehicles still in the middle of the intersection.

They found an elderly woman in one of the vehicles and assessed her. She was deemed to be in a critical condition with rapidly diminishing vital signs. Her side of the vehicle was severely damaged.

Firefighters from both the Krugersdorp Fire and Rescue Unit and Watchtower Society arrived shortly after the collision and used the Jaws of Life to extricate the woman from the wreckage.

Once freed, paramedics administered CPR and advanced life support interventions in an effort to save her life.

Unfortunately, they were unable to revive her, and the woman was declared dead on scene.

The elderly woman’s female passenger and the male driver of the other vehicle sustained moderate to serious injuries and were stabilised by paramedics before being transported to hospital for further assessment and care.

The cause of this T-bone collision is not yet known, but local authorities were on this scene for further investigations.

Robert Broom Drive has become notorious for its horrific crashes especially at its intersection with Paardekraal Drive.
