Indulging can be healthy especially during winter

When you walk down the streets of Krugersdorp in the afternoon, you can smell the aroma of delicious, heart-warming food being cooked in people’s homes. Meals tend to be less healthy and more comforting during winter because many people are not as body-conscious as they are in summer.

Many have asked why we put in more effort into our food and in a way, neglect our physical appearances in the middle of the year. Is it because we pile on more items of clothing?

But as winter begins to subside, many people, especially women, will try out different diets and even exercise routines in an effort to lose the extra weight they gained. This puts pressure on the body as it needs time to adjust to a healthier lifestyle.

A popular franchise in Krugersdorp said their restaurant chains cater for all seasons, but offer one particular dish in winter only. “We have a dish that is only available during the winter months. We introduced this dish in summer, and it did not sell as well as it did the following winter. This is one of the reasons we decided to offer it only during winter,” said the manager.

Zann-Marie Dittmer, a Krugersdorp dietitian, said we are supposed to eat the same types of food throughout the year, especially the five-a-day, which consists of two different fruits and three types of vegetables.

Foods that are high in fibre, protein, and iron are nutritious and help you maintain a healthy body weight – do not indulge in too much sugar and comfort food, stick to the same diet and find different interesting ways to prepare your food.
