Charmaine Booysens, the owner of the 9th Day Animal Shelter – a rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing centre – has been involved in an unfortunate collision on the N12 between the Kliprivier and Xavier Road on-ramps.

On Wednesday, 12 July, Charmaine was doing what she does best – rescuing animals – accompanied by her daughter, Nikita and five other rescued animals, including a pit bull and two chinchillas.

According to Charmaine she was driving in the right lane when a vehicle in the left lane suddenly stopped dead. This caused another vehicle to collide with the second, which then collided with Charmaine’s bakkie.

“I’m not sure whether the vehicle hit us as a result of the impact from the third vehicle, or whether the second vehicle sped up and hit us,” she said.

Of the three vehicles, her bakkie sustained the most damage.

“I’m so glad the animals were on the back seat, and not in the load area, as the canopy landed approximately 20 metres from the accident scene as a result of the collision. I am also very thankful that my daughter is safe,” she said.

Fortunately no-one, including the animals, sustained any serious injuries.

However, Charmaine’s bakkie is believed to be a write-off, and to top things off, she has no car insurance. This means she can no longer rescue animals or do home checks.

Despite everything that’s been thrown her way, including the financial instability of the animal shelter, Charmaine remains positive.
