‘Make ordinary things special’

Reading through the book of Ecclesiastes, I came across a verse that caught my attention.

Chapter 7:29 says: “This I have found, that God made us plain and simple, but we have made ourselves very complicated.”

It seems to be in our human nature to complicate even simple things. Life, relationships, work, and personal issues become so complex. Our greatest role model for simplicity must be Jesus. Although he faced many complex situations, he kept things simple. “Love God, love your neighbour,” He said.

Don’t misunderstand me, I know that life is full of complex situations but we can also make it more complicated than it is. In fact, I think if we could follow a few key principles, our lives could be a lot happier.

Try to keep your life simple. Avoid things that would complicate your life. Secondly, always pursue a path of sincerity. The world would be a better place if people would be sincere. In your marriage, at work and with friends, be sincere.

Finally, try to make ordinary, everyday things special. Appreciate and celebrate the ordinary. Pap and gravy is an opportunity to have a feast. Keep it simple, sincere and make ordinary things special. Amen.
