Police rescue suspect from mob justice

Police rescued a 31-year-old suspect from the wrath of an angry mob on Friday, 9 June after he allegedly tried to rob a shop in Riverside.

The suspect entered the shop at 3pm that day, with three accomplices. One of the suspects bound the complainant’s hands together and held a knife to his throat. The other suspects took the complainant’s brother and held him against the wall. They struck him on his back with a chair.

The suspects then proceeded to ransack the shop taking cash, groceries, and airtime vouchers before fleeing the scene on foot.

Community members who were near the shop when the incident happened, heard the complainant screaming and proceeded to chase the suspects. They apprehended one of the suspects and assaulted him before calling the police.

The suspect was subsequently rescued from the angry mob and later taken to hospital where he is under police guard. A case docket of business robbery was opened against him at the Kagiso Police Station.
