The ANC tabled a motion of no confidence in Mayor Michael Holenstein during a special council meeting on Wednesday, 7 June and with a 39–38 vote, succeeded in removing the Mayor from his position.

“The basis for the ANC’s motion was the Executive Mayor’s gross violations of the laws governing local government,” said Mzi Khumalo, deputy chairperson of the ANC in the West Rand.

“These violations include taking an Integrated Development Plan budget for 2017/ 2018 to communities without it being endorsed by council; political interference in administration, and landing the municipality in dire financial straits through reckless decision-making, among other things.”

Khumalo said that they needed to act swiftly and decisively to avoid the municipality being put under administration on the grounds of these numerous violations.

This is the second time the ANC has tried to remove the DA (in coalition with the EFF) from the mayoral seat since the August 2016 elections.

Khumalo added that the ANC believed the multi-party government of the city was incompetent and said it had caused a decline in service delivery since the elections.

The ANC claimed that the city deserves a responsible, transparent, honest and accountable executive mayor who puts the interests of the community of Mogale City, and not narrow selfish interests, first.

A council meeting must now be held within seven days to elect a new mayor.
