When they tried to cross the highway, they were hit by a vehicle. Paramedics who were travelling on the N14 came across the scene. They ran across the road to the women whom they believe were flung about 50 metres off the bonnet of the vehicle that had hit them before they landed onto the centre median.

They worked alongside West Rand District firefighters, but found that both women had extensive injuries and had died on impact. Various other emergency service personnel such as QRS and ER24 were also on scene to assist. The vehicle that hit them came to a standstill about 100 metres from the crash site. The driver, a woman, sustained minor injuries.

The exact details of the crash are being investigated by Muldersdrift Police members who were on scene. A case of culpable homicide was opened at the Muldersdrift Police Station.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Roodepoort mortuary.
