Kagiso gymnasts have big dreams

It has been proved that bad influences can be neutralised by participation in sport.

A new gymnastics club was recently opened in Kagiso to promote the sport within the area and also to safeguard the youth and children from bad influences in and around Kagiso. Gymnastics helps them to focus on themselves and have goals for the future.

Gymnastics is unfortunately a very expensive sport and the children are from poor backgrounds – and some of the children’s parents are not working.

The club was started for developmental reasons. It then decided to compete against a number of schools during 2016. The children started to train harder and travelled as far as Newlands to compete. They excelled and went through to the district competition. All eight of the gymnasts brought back gold medals. They then proceeded to the provincials in Pretoria, where they also achieved gold medals.

“I have been asked questions such as ‘Where do you train?’, and ‘Do you have equipment?’ Unfortunately, we don’t. It is all hard work, focus and determination that really pays off,” said chairperson Lelly Masoko.

The team also went to the nationals in Kempton Park and brought back eight gold medals. The club feels that the children have potential as they will be representing South Africa in the Commonwealth games if they can raise the needed funds.

The gymnastics competition starts in May and the club is in need of transport, gymnastics attire and an entry fee for each gymnast for competition.
