ANC and DA West Rand at each others’ throats

The West Rand ANC office issued a press release on Wednesday, 8 February, stating that they were less than thrilled about statements made by the DA in Mogale City.

There were three statements that the ANC seemed particularly unhappy about: “The ANC is sabotaging service delivery”; “The ANC applies illegal rules to run Council affairs”; and “The ANC is to blame for the failure of the DA executive to hold IDP Roadshows.”

“The DA makes wild claims about the organisation with a track record of twenty years running a successful municipality from transitional days to August 2016,” said Refentse Mangope, spokesperson for the ANC West Rand.

Mangope said further that the DA/ EFF coalition is running a previously thriving municipality “into the ground” through various actions, and that, “The DA statement is a clear indication of a desperate move to tarnish the ANC’s reputation.”

Mangope responded to the DA’s first claim by saying the ANC is a popular organisation and it would not be a surprise to have many members and supporters on the staff, “but we were under the impression that the DA/ EFF coalition would be aware that our staff holds diverse views hence it is not necessary to drag them into the DA/ EFF failure to run the municipality.”

He responded to the second claim by mentioning that the coalition party walked out of three council meetings, with the mayor leading the way. “This has led to non-compliance with the municipal legislation.”

Mangope further claimed the DA had suffered a “sudden attack of amnesia” that obliterated the rules in dispute.

“[The coalition held] an illegal meeting to remove the Speaker and Chief Whip. They do not need to be underhanded and cut corners to achieve their goals to remove the Speaker and Chief Whip of Council.”

He also claimed that DA councillors are afraid to address township communities, saying, “We are aware of DA councillors fear to address our community in the townships and the rural nodes. The ANC cannot be a scapegoat.”

He said the DA/EFF has proven itself to be lacking in governance, and that it focuses on walkouts that have not benefited the community and on trying to run the municipality illegally.
