Make time for God in the new year

As the new year starts, it is a good time to think. Think about the past, think about the future and think about life.

The clever people say, “If you keep doing what you have always done, you will keep getting what you have always gotten.” If we want 2017 to be different, to be better, we have to change a few things.

During this important time of contemplation, it is important to establish priorities for the new year. God – where does he fit into the programme? Family, your spouse, parents, children – are they allocated some prime time? Friends, good friends – can you make space for them?

Yes, most of us have to work but if all we do is work, we may wake up without God or family. I have learnt a lot about people over the years. What you are willing to spend money on says a lot about your priorities. By looking at your diary or daily planner, I can quickly guess where your heart is.

For me personally, I plan to budget a bit more time for silence and solitude during 2017. Yes, like you, I have a full life and my days tend to get hectic. But I will make time for these two priorities – silence and solitude. Why not start right now by taking a few minutes to set the stage for your new year? “Be still and know that I am God.”
