Dead man appears in court

A man believed to be in his 30s who was previously declared dead appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court this afternoon (29 June) after being arrested late on Sunday night (26 June).

Local police were shocked to learn that the suspect, who allegedly burned to death in his vehicle in December last year, was actually alive and well, and presumably living in the Free State. The suspect was brought back to the Krugersdorp Police Station for questioning. He appeared briefly in the D Court, and will remain in police custody.

His Facebook wall is full of condolence messages from friends reminiscing about the good memories they have of the suspect, none of whom knew that the body found in the burnt-out vehicle located outside the Free State and believed to be his, was not, in fact, their friend.

The tall male suspect with a pierced ear and a beard entered the empty court room shortly after lunch to take the stand.

The state did not want to disclose too much detail about his arrest or his fake death, but requested that the suspect be kept in police custody for another week, to give the police time to profile his connection with another Krugersdorp murder case.

Before he made his way back to the cells, the suspect whispered something to another man, possibly a friend or relative, who was sitting in the front row of the courtroom.
He will remain in police custody until 6 July, when he will make his second appearance.
