A 24-year-old woman from Kagiso was arrested after she allegedly left her two-year-old child unattended for an entire evening.

Police arrested the mother after they received a complaint of child negligence from a concerned member of the community.

“The neighbour told the police the suspect left her baby next door playing with other children at around 8.15pm that evening. The mother never returned. When the neighbour woke up the next morning around 2am, she found the baby asleep, outside in front of her house’s door,” Kagiso Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer, Solomon Sibiya said.

The neighbour noticed the baby’s mother had not yet returned home as the door was still locked.

“The neighbour allegedly took the baby to her home after which she reported the matter to the police” Sibiya explained.

When the mother arrived home later during the day she was arrested and detained at Kagiso Police station where a case docket of child negligence was registered.

She appeared briefly in court and was released with a warning and a date for a next court appearance.

The Kagiso Police’s acting Station Commander, Colonel Swart would like to send a stern warning to mothers who abandon their children and put their own needs first, “Children must be protected at all times, and not put on danger like this suspect has done. Children are defenseless and some are subjected to various sorts of abuse daily. As Kagiso police we always prioritize the safety of all children and will not hesitate to arrest irresponsible mothers”.
