From Friday, 16 June, until Sunday, 18 June, 16 teams battled it out on the soccer field, hoping to walk away as the winners of the fifth annual youth tournament held at the Matshelapad informal settlement.

Usually, the Tarlton Police hosts an annual youth tournament in an effort to keep youngsters off the streets and on the soccer field, and educate them about crime and substance abuse, but this year, it was the community’s turn to organise and host the event.

Their aim this year was to not only raise awareness of, and educate the community about kidnapping and women and child abuse, but also to get youngsters to stay away from drugs, alcohol and any other dangerous substance.

“This is a very effective way to not only keep them off the streets, but also to showcase their talents,” said Goodman Mkhize, one of the organisers.

Some of the teams that went through to the quarter-finals included Bruno, Magaliesburg, 4Stars, BUGP (Blood United by God’s Protection), Bramfischer Eagles and Broom Boys.

During the last day of the tournament, the Tarlton Police team triumphed over a team consisting of all the officials and organisers in an exhibition match.

At the end of the tournament, the winners, the Bramfischer Eagles, walked away with a trophy and prize money of

R30 000.

“The tournament was a huge success, and we are most definitely looking forward to the next one. We would also like to thank our sponsors IJ Oil Traders,” Goodman concluded.
