Grade 9 learners on nappy duty

Not all the Grade 9 learners were happy about performing the task.

Taking care of a baby while you are in school is hard work. That is what the Grade 9 learners of St Ursula’s realised when they performed a baby task recently.

As part of the Life Orientation curriculum, the learners discussed and took on the responsibilities of parenting and make responsible decisions with regard to their future. The baby task is developed to open learners’ eyes to the cost and serious nature of having a family, especially at a young age.

The school aims to ensure that their teenagers make responsible choices and strive to becoming contributing members of society. The task involved the following:

• Drawing up a budget for the first year of a baby’s life

• Working out a schedule to nurture and take care of all the baby’s needs for at least seven days

Each learner also received a scenario explaining their family situation, which also stated the baby’s specific medical condition. The outcome of the exercise was to show the extremely high cost of having a baby and also the hard work involved in taking care of it.

The school hopes that performing the task will convince their learners to wait until they are settled and more mature before they become parents.
