The vehicle was found in Soweto at about 6pm. It is believed the vehicle tracking system aided in the recovery. No arrests were made. The canopy of the bakkie, plus the personal belongings of the owner in the vehicle were however stolen.

“We have noticed an increase in this type of crime and don’t want others to fall into the same trap,” said Warrant Officer Van Dyk from VISS.

A case of hijacking has been opened at Krugersdorp Police station and an investigating officer was appointed.

Van Dyk gave the following advice to motorists to avoid being caught with the same scam:

“Motorists who are pulled over by an unmarked vehicle and those who feel too uncomfortable to stop should put on their hazards and drive to the nearest petrol station or public place. Make sure this place has security cameras or CCTV cameras.”

Since the incidents began, the Soweto Police have stopped using unmarked vehicles with blue lights, to ensure people don’t fall into this trap. However, the Krugersdorp Traffic Department still uses unmarked vehicles with blue lights to pull people over.

Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale, spokesperson for Krugersdorp Police, said if drivers suspect criminal activity, they should drive to a safe place where other people are around.

“They can also contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 to report suspicious activity,” said Mashale.
