In motocross dust we trust

Ruben Aucamp leads the pack during the Senior, Ladies and 2-stroke race while Tiegan Reed, Jacques Smit and another rider follow closely behind.

On Saturday, 11 February, 147 motocross riders battled it out on the rugged track of Dirt Bronco, Krugersdorp, to determine who will be named the champions of the Northern Regional MX championships.

Leonard du Toit plows through the mud during the 85cc Junior race.

The races started at about 10.15am and riders – in their distinct categories – lined up to start their 10-lap journey to the checkered flag.

First up was the 50cc Support race. Eli Young, the youngest rider of the day, at only four years of age, was part of this group and his feet barely touched the ground as he sat on his trusty metal steed.

The suspense of the startup was nearly unbearable to the parents of the riders as their voices of encouragement could be heard over the roaring sounds of the motorcycle engines.

Off they went with an amazing start. The riders in this category and the 50cc Pro category made their way to the smaller track where they pushed their motocross bikes to the limit to attempt to finish first. Chase Linley finished first in the 50cc support category, with Phillip du Plessis ending closely behind him. Jake Pretorius crossed the finish line in third place. The group broke the Motocross South Africa entry record as 15 riders entered the category.

Cam Durow exits the first turn of the track and plunges through the mud to maintain his position in the High school rider category during Saturdays’ Northern Regional championships.

“It was astounding to see that number of young riders,” said Eddie Wantenaar, the owner of Dirt Bronco. “It is good to see the young riders and to know that in 10 years’ time there will still be some riders participating in this championship.”

Mark-Jordan Dickson and Thor Johnson are both 8-year-old motorcyclists who competed in the 50cc Pro motocross race on Saturday, 11 February.

The 65cc and 85cc categories also drew a lot of entries. It is clear that the junior ranks are seeing excellent growth and we don’t need to tell you what this means for the sport.

The regional championships form part of a series where riders compete over six rounds. The next regional race/ round will take place on 18 March at Terra Topia, in the Northern Farms Bicycle Park.

Christiaan Cillier cuts a corner during the 85cc Junior motocross race at the Northern Region championships on Saturday, 11 February.

The entire series is organised by Motocross South Africa, who want to congratulate Eddie and his team on the amazing job he has done to upgrade Dirt Bronco. They added that, “Without a doubt, this is an excellent step forward for MX in the Northern Regions.”

Spectator attendance was great, and it was good to see people lining the fences to watch the action take place.
