Danie Enslin, Paul van Gass, Otto van Eeden, Nico Pieterse and Ruben Basson, judokas from KJK who won medals at the South African Primary Schools Judo Tournament.

KJK Judo is proud to announce that 13 of the 16 judokas who competed in this year’s SA Primary Schools Judo Tournament came home with medals. The judokas recently competed in a tournament at the Portuguese Hall, in Turffontein.

“The children worked so hard and these results are well deserved,” said Sensei Katja Bruwer. “Having said that, all these tournaments have their memorable moments.”

Otto van Eeden won his first bronze medal ever at this tournament. Ruben Basson, by contrast, was 600 grams over the weight limit for his group, but instead of paying a fine, decided to lose the weight by running laps. It was a tough time for Ruben, but he was supported by his team-mates the entire time. He lost the weight and fought to win a silver medal.

“He came to me after the tournament,” said Katja, “and told me the reason he fought so hard was because of what he had endured in the previous days, and the support he got from his team-mates. This goes to show that at the end of the day, the mind is very powerful and it is more important than any physical advantage.”
