It’s true, seriously!

Steve Gilroy, owner of the Gilroy's Brewery in Muldersdrift celebrating the good news with a Gilroy's dark ale beer.

It was such a big story, no one really believed it.

“A friend provided some Serious in Cape Town and I was hooked from the first sip! I included it in Carte Blanche because Bond insists on only the best!”Jeffery Deaver, author

When Steve Gilroy, the owner of the Gilroy’s Brewery in Muldersdrift revealed a published secret involving the fictional international renowned British Secret Service agent James Bond, many were sceptic.

On page 218 of the 37th James Bond novel written by Jeffery Deaver the Bond character, during his stay at the Table Mountain Hotel in Cape Town, ordered a Gilroy’s dark ale, known to South Africans as a ‘Serious’.

Although Bond was unable to finish the beer because his life was in danger and he had to leave, he looked back with utter regret for wasting the beer.

For this reason Gilroy tried to keep this information a secret for as long as possible while he upgraded his brewery into a bigger micro brewery.

“If word got out, then many good folk would wish to taste the beer,” he told the news on a previous occasion.

After revealing the secret he had to keep since 2011, the words in the book gave no justice to the truth as people were still in disbelief that it could be the beer brewed by Gilroy.

The news contacted Deaver who confirmed that the Gilroy’s dark ale mentioned in the book is that of Muldersdrift’s Gilroy.

“A friend provided some Serious in Cape Town and I was hooked from the first sip! I included it in Carte Blanche because Bond insists on only the best!”

To Gilroy this was the answer he wanted to get for a long time.

“I and Michael Biljon, brewery manager have spoken about getting in touch with Deaver, but we never did. This answer is the missing link I have been searching for!” he says excitedly.

“Now they will have to believe us as this has to turn a sceptic into a believer. Deaver is a great man with great taste in beer.”

He says he always will be grateful to him as he has put Gilroy’s Brewery in Muldersdrift on the global map.

“Now I am wondering why Bond aficionados are not flocking to the brewery,” he laughs.
